Flexibility makes us move; rigidity stops us.
Our functioning depends on our principles, beliefs, approaches, experiences, and social norms. These are the key factors that are responsible for where we stand today. In the wholeness of things, the actions of individuals are broadly classified into:
Flexible
Rigid
Flexibility occurs when someone believes in wide gaps between theories and practises. Rigidity appears in people who are measuring real-life situations against what they have been told and learned before adulthood. In other words, they practise what their theories dictate. In this process, their unfounded principles and immature approaches become major bottlenecks.
In all situations, upbringing and culture are important components of all our decisions and actions. However, the special qualities of an individual, like interpretation, upgrading knowledge, and close observation, make that person either rigid or flexible in the same surroundings and exact social context.
All evidence suggests that we must be flexible to overcome real-life problems that are different for different people, even in the same family or organisation. A person with a flexible mindset focuses on problems and gets their rote learning and flawed feeding of the mind adjusted to get work done. Practically, it is the moulding of perception, not the core principles.
When travelling or visiting new places, we make adjustments to our routines—eating, sleeping, walking, and so on. A rigid person fails to get new experiences because he is hard on himself by adhering to his routines and rituals.
Since their existence, men have been made to move in search of food, safety, meeting other groups, and exploring conveniences, and this human journey is ever-deepening and widening.
Thus, rigidity never suits the purpose for which we are born. The structure of the minds of men is a unique gift. We are blessed with our minds to do wonders and not to remain stuck in a particular setting at all stages. Stuckness amounts to the denial of benefits from natural arrangements that seem to be made for our benefit. We have a digital world today as a result of the curiosity of some people, though it was always available in nature.
While emphasising movements for vast exposures, it must not be construed that our movements are the only way to solve our problems. The most important thing is to look at all living and nonliving entities around us as deeply as possible. We shall come to know many things about those entities that have not yet been identified and tested for their utilities. All these things are possible only when we keep ourselves outside our cocoons and remain eager to know what is what.
Rigidity takes hold when there is no unlearning. Since the early stages, we have encountered many undesirable things that constitute our beliefs and understandings. These things remain in our minds, like rust mingled with iron rods. There must be some mechanism in place to shift our unexplained beliefs to the dustbin. The easiest and most established mechanism is to keep learning, keep growing, and share new inputs from all available resources.
The door of flexibility is opened when we accept that our knowledge is nothing in comparison to what other people have accomplished in and around our milieu. We deny being driven by the floating opinions of people in our contact list for various reasons. We are ready to acquire information from varying sources. We try to find consensus amidst conflicts and controversies. We believe in the formula: take pain before accumulating gain.
A flexible man is like a running car, and a rigid man is like a car in a showroom. All features of a car are tested only when the wheels meet the road. In the same way, our abilities are examined when we come across the realities of life.
Flexibility helps us cross our boundaries, enjoy the lives of those on the larger periphery, and feel life is worth living.
