Let vertical and horizontal learning happen together.
To be a little larger than life, learning something new every day is a must. We are responsible for making our lives as good as possible. It is possible only when we know what we are doing and what the possibilities are. Many of us are counting day-to-day problems more than what they are without identifying actions to address them. This is the reason they somehow sustain and complete the whole time as part of crowds. Living with herd minds doesn’t allow our abilities to expand.
While talking of action plans for people willing to stand out, they embrace the habits of reading, writing, speaking, listening, reflecting, correcting, and actively engaging themselves and often do what they design to do. In this class, there are two aspects:
Vertical learning
Horizontal learning.
Vertical learning is a common phenomenon. If a person is selected to be specialised in a particular subject, that person keeps his whole attention on that subject as intensively as possible for life. Normally, he is not bothered if his horizontal learning, like behaviour, handling situations, and dealing with people, is not at all appreciable.
To live a life in an orderly manner, it is necessary that we are not limited to our specialisation. We keep learning extensively (not selectively) to widen our experiences, boost our wisdom, and get the most out of every day. In our travels, we may learn more than our bookish knowledge. In social functions, we encounter some unique situations that add something to our perceptions and conceptions. In a seminar on health issues, we may learn about preventive measures, though it is simply an awareness programme.
A balanced life is more fulfilling, irrespective of our functioning as parents, homemakers, artists, economists, academics, or something else. The desire to live a balanced life means revealing ourselves and being true to who we are. It certifies that a person is more than just a knowledge holder and believes in thriving.
For horizontal learning, we don’t need extra time, separate efforts, or a special combination. Rather, it happens simultaneously with our primary engagements. We have to be in learning mode and nothing else. We have to be original and natural. Things happen with effort, not with a magic wand.
Once we develop a habit of learning, it creates ripple effects in all walks of life. We should work to make a deep and lasting impression in the minds of the people, not to exclusively hold titles and occupy top positions.
