Soft skills make our hard skills more productive.
We are fully aware of the importance of knowledge, skills, and experience in our lives. We are architects; it is a hard skill. But knowing how to handle and satisfy a customer is a soft skill. Like hard skills, soft skills are also learned.
We spend the early phases of life acquiring knowledge and hard skills in schools, colleges, and training institutions. But there is no special care to nurture our soft skills during these times.
Normally, individuals who are not good at soft skills find it difficult to get employed or to continue employment for a long time. Likewise, if we are weak in soft skills, we can’t be expected to go forward with our own enterprises.
Examples of soft skills are decision-making, negotiation, innovation, delegation, selling our products, and so forth.
Say one person has a command of math, but he or she is not able to deliver it properly before the students. He is bad at making the application of formulas understandable to others. He or she is obviously bad at soft skills.
A student is intelligent and doing well in school. Once he starts living in other towns for higher studies, he does not adjust well to new environments, and he is now an average student. What is this? It is a lack of adaptability. It is a soft skill.
Soft skills indicate our abilities to handle affairs beyond our knowledge and hard skills. We need better soft skills to compete and grow in this competitive market. We all need to be careful about the qualities of our soft skills while learning hard skills. Soft skills apply to all kinds of living and working conditions, irrespective of our cadre, nature of responsibility, place of activities, or faculties we belong to.
Even at a small event like a get-together, our soft skills work better to impress others than our degrees and qualifications.
The majority of us learn soft skills in informal ways. Mr. X is now a very influential public speaker. He was very shy during his study period. It means he acquired the art of public speaking when he started a job, a business, or something else. It is a soft skill. Mr. Y is never late in coming to the office. It’s punctuality. It is a soft skill.
Whatever our domain of activities, both our hard skills and soft skills are powerful tools in achieving our ambitions in life.
